These days, there is a lot of talk about cloud computing. In this article, you will find out the answers you need to know about cloud computing.

So, what does a term "cloud" refer to?

The easiest way to explain cloud would be to explain its opposite: on-premise (on-prem) infrastructure.  An on-premise server is an on-site physical server that a company must manage and maintain individually. A cloud infrastructure refers to hardware and software components that are available to users via network. Generally, the term is used to describe data centers that are available over the Internet.

Is cloud expensive?

Unlike the on-prem infrastructure, there is no need to make large capital investments in expensive equipment. With cloud, you will usually end up paying for only the resources that you use. The cost of system upgrades, new hardware and software might be included in your contract. You will no longer need to pay wages for expert staff. Your energy consumption costs will be reduced. So it is safe to say that in most cases, using cloud instead of on-prem solutions will result in largely reduced IT costs.

What do I do if I need more resources?

You upscale (purchase more resources). As mentioned, the beauty of the cloud is that you will end up paying for only what you use. For example, if you have an application service which is using 4 GB RAM and you need to upgrade to 8 GB, you just make a purchase and the added resources will be available to you instantly. However, this will almost certainly result in an increased fee you will have to pay (most usually monthly).

What do I do if I need less resources?

You downscale (downgrade the resources), which should also be visible on your monthly bill.

What kind of applications can be run in cloud?

Basically, any kind of application can be run in cloud, which does not mean that it is always a good idea.

Is cloud secure?

Many companies have concerns about its data when it comes to cloud. They prefer to keep their data nearby, instead in some large data centers. That way of thinking can be very dangerous. The reality is that most companies don't have data security that could be even remotely comparable to cloud data center security. Nowadays, most cloud providers have remarkable physical security and access control, top-level information security, backup power generation facilities and protection against external and environmental threats. Big players have automated systems to detect any unwanted access and employ thousands of security experts. Most of them will even provide you with disaster recovery options. Imagine having to implement all that within your company. Could you even estimate the effort and the cost?

How can my data be secure if it travels over the network?

The key to this is encrypting the data which is transmitted over networks and stored in databases. You can set up a VPN (virtual private network) between a date center and service consumers and limit the data from any sniffing. Most cloud services can even be configured to restrict the access only to certain IP addresses.

What are the drawbacks of cloud computing?

There are very few disadvantages. There is always a risk of low quality service delivery from a cloud provider, which is why you should do your homework and make some background checks. There is also a risk of internet service disruption, but you can always have some backup solution in place.
